Penny Allen has been in the trenches with ERW as a consultant and as an instructor for many years; during that time, she's observed a great deal about how companies see JDE reporting. As a primer for her Collaborate presentation this April, we asked Penny to share with us what she's been seeing and hearing regarding the way this tool is used, what people tend not to know about it, and how companies could be maximizing their use of ERW to improve their reporting capabilities.

The JDE Employee Work Center offers a great feature that allows users to be notified by email of any error messages generated by batch jobs. The feature becomes not so great when there could be hundreds to thousands of error messages--all requiring drill down to multiple levels to see the root cause of the issue. In this article, Ricky Cai demonstrates how to create a customized report that gets down to the nitty gritty detail that you need, saving you time and effort.

Here's some good news for all you graph and chart fans out there. As part of Tools Release 8.96, two new features--Text Block and Text Block Control--allow you to use Form Design Aid to create all the bar graphs, line graphs, and pie charts you and your end users want. In JDE Land, there is quite a bit of excitement about the BI Publisher, which gives us the ability to create nicely-formatted reports and documents in XML format. But there is also some disappointment regarding the email report distribution functionality. While Oracle is planning enhancements around this, David Taverner has devised an interim solution, using some tools provided by Oracle and some custom coding. You'll have to roll up your sleeves, but it can be done – and David already did the thinking. If you want a good solid overview of BI Publisher, please download JDEtips article, "Integrated BI Publisher for EnterpriseOne" from the JDEtips Document Library by Scott Beebe.

Scott wraps it up with report distribution tips, and, as always, the "gotchas" you won’t find in the book.

So, you're using Enterprise Report Writer, and you want to subtotal in a tabular section. Seems simple enough, but is it really? As Penny Allen notes, "ease" in JDE report writing only happens once you fully understand the dynamics involved. And with tabular sections, there's more than meets the eye. Penny demonstrates how tabular sections interact within the report and the best practices you'll want to follow in order to achieve the correct report output.

In the January 2009 issue of JDEtips, our ERW guru Penny Allen presented a very detailed overview of Financial Report Writing in EnterpriseOne. Somewhere, in your vast archives of WorldWriter reports, is the report for which you've been searching. Maybe it's something you created a long time ago and want to resurrect for a current project. Or maybe it's a calculation that needs to be fixed on multiple reports. Or perhaps you just want to see which reports look at what files. In this article, Rick demonstrates how to quickly pull up reports for which you might otherwise spend hours digging around.

How are financial reports in JD Edwards different from other reports? This is one of the many questions that JDEtips University's ERW instructor Penny Allen comes across during her classes. Fact is, the details of Financial Report creation elude many JDE users, which inspired Penny to take us step by step through the process. In this article, Penny addresses key topics such as properties of the tabular section, smart fields, using the Financial Application Wizard, and much more. So, if financial reports in EnterpriseOne have been a mystery to you--read this article and consider this case "solved"!

It's always a shame to see robust functionality left ignored because people find it intimidating. That's often the case with World Writer, according to Rick Snell. It's big and it's not well understood. Rick hopes to help diminish some of that trepidation by explaining how World Writer looks at data by using the mathematical concept of sets and subsets - including an in depth look at Summary Functions. Then he'll demonstrate how you can create a cleaner report by using headers and footers to remove "clutter" so that you can add more vital information onto one report.

There's gold hidden within your JD Edwards World menu system. OK--maybe not the rare metal variety, but there is a wealth of information in there, just waiting for you to tap in and discover. Rick Snell demonstrates how to use three key files--F0082 (Menu Master), F00821 (Menu Selections), and F0082H (Menu Selection History)--to do such tasks as determine sources of Address Book revisions, find security holes in menu masks, set security criteria for DreamWriter users, develop test scripts, and much more.

Somethings aren't quite as easy as they would appear they should be; integrating Business Objects' Crystal Reports with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne is a perfect example. Sure, there are guidelines and manuals that provide "setup instructions". But, as Andy Vanspranghe discovered, those manuals leave out a few key details that can mean the difference between a smooth installation and hair-pulling frustration. Andy is more than happy to share with you the little "gotchas" he learned, the hard way of course, in hopes that your experiences with Crystal Reports will be much clearer.

It's no surprise that with over 10,000 business functions in EnterpriseOne and only a handful even documented, working with business functions can bewilder even seasoned developers. Penny Allen, our ERW guru, has encountered this issue numerous times and has helped clients find their way around business functions (BSFNs). Based on her Collaborate presentation, Penny has assembled this handy tutorial for us, complete with a behind-the-scenes look at BSFNs to help demystify the process. Use this the next time you encounter a BSFN of the undocumented variety, and you just may be able to figure out that elusive mapping.

So, you've got lots of reports to run, and everyone only wants to see what they need to see--not a bit more. Does this mean you have to spend the entire day recreating the report for each individual, then embark on the tedious task of emailing each one individually? Mary Woltman feels your pain--she dealt with a similar situation and found a UBE solution that addresses this need, to run specific reports for specific individuals automatically, without having someone stand guard. We're sure you'll appreciate the flexibility of this solution, too!

So, you've got a bunch of sales order that you need to invoice. You go ahead and run invoice print. But, what do you get? One big PDF file with all of the invoices. Not exactly practical since you'll probably need to send individual PDFs to various customers via email or fax. You really need a separate PDF for each invoice. Does this mean you'll have to run a separate report for each one? Not necessary, says JDEtips newcomer Cezary Dadura. Cezary shows us how to use Report Design Aid and a custom process to get the results we want from JD Edwards.

Looking for some tricks that are really treats this Halloween? JDEtips newcomer Jeff Babcock has reached into his World Writer goody-bag and scared up some great tips to make your reporting experiences less spooky. Whether you're afraid of the dreaded "divide by zero", always jump when you have to calculate days between dates, or totally frightened by using non-JDE reports in World Writer--Jeff takes the fear and frustration out of these and other common reporting problems (so you'll be less likely to want to TP someone's house the next time you get handed a last minute report request!)

Not ready to spend loads of time and money on a reporting tool? Take a look at Microsoft's SQL Server Reporting Services product. Won't cost you extra if you are using SQL Server anyway, and it's a very straightforward reporting tool. You will of course need some knowledge of your JDE data structures, but if you know how to create a report in Access, you will find this quite similar. If you've never looked into this tool, take a few moments for this quick tour.

No ERP system, including our dearly beloved JDE, has all the reports in exactly the format we like. That's why so many of us turn to spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel to take standard report data and further slice it and dice it to our liking. No, this article isn't about creating Excel Pivot Tables! It's about how you can get cleaner Comma Separated Variable data out of your JDE reports. Seems there is a bit of a problem with report headers being treated like data, and this tip shows you how to clean that up automatically, before you import into the spreadsheet.

Many of our best JDE tips are the result of recently-experienced (or long-remembered) "opportunities" encountered by consultants at a client site. This one is no exception! If you have never met WorldWriter and desire an introduction, see Marty Burns' article "WorldWriter Basics". If you are a developer seeking a sophisticated treatise on file unions and joins, see David Johnson's article "Joining on a Union - An Incredible Development Tool for Sales Reporting". But if you are in between - you already know the basics of JDE report writers and are a super user or functional consultant - you may want to circle this article.

What if you asked what day it was, and someone told you it was 105003. Huh? Well, technically, that's correct, but it isn't very user-friendly at first glance, is it? That's the Julian date for January 3, 2005, and that's the way EnterpriseOne stores dates. Within the EnterpriseOne applications, the dates are twisted around and presented to us in our usual format, but when you want to use a good third-party reporting too--Crystal Reports in this case--you have to teach that tool how to make the translation. Marty Resnick shares with us how to make that happen.
